A bright crisp morning, with rain overnight, two unbeaten sides clashing head on. Ongar started sharply, with James and Jacob first to tackle giving Ongar plenty of possession. But it was Emblem who had the first strikes on goal, the first going narrowly wide and the second pushed wide by the strong hands of Ben Hughes. The game was evenly balanced, Lewis, back to his best, found Nari with a looping cross which allowed him to convert with the faintest of touches. James and Jacob held their own in mid-field, meaning Emblem found it hard to play a passing game, and that, along with solid defending by Fillingham and Little Gunny from a number of corners, meant Ongar went into the second half with a narrow 1-0 lead. Mark's team talk at half time must have been to carry on the same,as Ongar came out sharp and lively forcing emblem on to the back foot. This was becoming Ongar's best performance of the season, with a number of outstanding performances allowing the Ongar "faithful" to relax and enjoy a great display. Ongar's pressure told half way in the second half,Jacob converting after good work from Lewis and James.
Emblem showed what a good side they are by playing some lovely one touch approach play forcing a good save from Hughes and superb defending from Fillingham and Gunny. But this was always going to be Ongar's day, and a corner driven in by James was volleyed home by Nari who didn't have the best of games but like all good strikers, found the net. To there credit Emblem still came forward resulting in a goal mouth scramble, the ball hitting both post and bar then landing in the keepers grateful arms. Mark then brought on Reed and Curtis who both looked like they'd been on from the start, securing a fantastic victory and performance that saw the defence rock solid, midfield dominant, strikers clinical and the manager extremely happy! The only downside to a fantastic day was the absence of press officer and photographer Nick, who was busy saving London, resulting in no pics. Still the victory will do. Performances of the day were plentiful, but in big games you need your skipper to lead from the front.
